Additives in foods

Nick's picture

I noticed this morning not long after giving Eric breakfast (vegimit and cream cheese on toast) he started acting like a nightmare! He was moody, threw a tantram and basically was not his normal happy self. I have been having a few days like this and am sick of it! He is normally a really well behaved child.

So I did some thinking and rememberd a conversation about food additives. I had a look at the labels on everything he ate this morning and checked online to see if they could be a problem.

I found this amazing site that listed all 35 food additives permitted in Australia and highlighted the 50 that are known to cause problems- hyperactivity, hives, other reactions. 2 of the preservatives in cream cheese were on the 'Avoid' list and one from the vegimite! I checked other foods in the house and thankfully not much of what is in the pantry have additives in them, or have the safe ones.

So now I am on a mission to eliminate all additives (or very least the 50 that are known to cause problems) from Erics diet and see if I can improve his mood.

For those who are interested, this is the website:

I have printed the list out and will check everything I buy from now on. Will let you all know if I notice any difference.

just going through the list again and writing down the 'avoid' ones, came across a note saying Sulphites are te biggies for asthmatics. I am athmatic and currently feel tight in the chest, I had cream cheese and vegimite on toast for breafast as well and one of the additives was 220- a sulphite. Is interesting to know these things, it could be a cause of my asthma.

Did little Eric have white bread?
There was a segment once on Today Tonight, proving how white bread affected children. One grand son reacts very badly to sugar products.

June, we only eat wholemeal bread. stopped usuing white a while ago

Just noticed your weight ticker !!
How long has it taken for you to lose that amount?
That is a wonderful achievement, considering the events of the past year.
I checked out the site you suggested, it is quite amazing, thanks for putting it there.
As this message will disappear in a a day or so, would it be a good idea to put that information in the forum?

PS

Just noticed it is a forum topic. Could there be any ingredient in the bread that is on the "avoid" list.?
There are so many additives etc in all breads now, maybe there could be something.

just had a look at the bread, all the ingrediants are on the safe list thankfully. wish I had some white bread around just to check whats in it- not that I would change back to white bread

I have a feeling that one of the preservatives in commercially prepared breads from the supermarket can cause problems.... Check out that also ...

Bakers delight don't have the bad preservative thats all I remember

Thank you Nick!

You are an angel! From your investigations, you have helped me so much. The site(s) you suggested are excellent.
Within 30 minutes of my lunch today, I started coughing, checked the ingredients....sure enough "bad" ones!
It was interesting to read about dried fruit. I have been eating dried apricots since a very young child with no reaction. Dried fruit is "bad", probably because of the additives used today.
My asthma only started just over 2 years ago, I now suspect it is the foods I am eating!
Especially dried apricots, it was around that time I found some delicious ones, that I eat all the time!!
Thank you so much for the information, I am so grateful.

Eric has been in a good mood today, spent some time playing in his room after he got home from day care and was happy all morning up until I took him to day care. Is it a coincedence that today for the first time in a while he did not have vegimite and cream cheese on toast for breakfast?
Obviously it is jut day one and could be a coincedence so will keep an eye on his moods and see if it continues.

Tonight, a bottle of beautiful Balsamic vinegar was turned the wrong way,in my cupboard, staring at me was the word *sulfites*!!.
This is not something I use regularly, as I use apple cider vinegar, that is something I won't be using again.
I believe the reason there is an increase in so many health problems, is the additives & preservatives.
Nick, I am so pleased little Eric had a happy day.
Not sure if you give him lollies, I have been told that red lollies are "bad" because of the additives etc.
Not sure how you could learn which ones are safe.

I wonder how many children are chastised for being naughty or moody, when it is the food that causes it.

Nick's picture

I think a lot of people assume that the food they give their kids is fine as they ate it when they were young, but over the years companies add more favourings, colours, preservatives ect into these foods so kids might be having a reaction to a food that was once a good choice. I admit, there have been days where Eric has been naughty and I have always put it down to him just having a bad day but now I am not so sure, I really do believe its the foods.
In saying that, some kids can eat these foods and have no reaction so a mother is not doing the wrong thing in giving a child the foods with preservatives in them, but if there is any hint that there is a problem I definatly think its worthwile checking out.

And just to let you know June, I dont give eric any lollies, every now and again someone will try and give him one but he generally refuses as its not his 'normal' food.
