Toddler advice needed

Nick's picture

Yesterday afternoon I noticed Eric was really wet down his front but did not know why, later that night he was drenched again so was watching him closely for a while and found out why.

All of a sudden Eric is spitting out a fair amount of the water he is drinking. I dont think its deliberate, he is wanting a drink but with almost every mouthfull he spits out some water, at one point this afternoon the spit was more of a squirt and he was left drenched and so was the floor.

Have checked the bottle that he uses and its working just fine, is a straw bottle designed for toddlers. He does not seem to be unhealthy but is not eating as much- did not eat dinner last night and tried to give him dinner tonight but did not want it.

So, what do you think is causing it? do you think its a medical problem causing him to have swallowing issues or is he just all of a sudden trying to drink to much at once and cant swallow it all?

I have never had an issue with his drinking and dont know what to do- am running out of pjs for him as i need to change him every time he has a drink!

Hey Nick!

I've been thinking about you and thought I'd pop in to see how you were going! It's always a tricky one when your tot starts displaying different behaviour and you don't know what it means! I'm not really sure what's happening with Eric but is he drinking so much that he is too full to eat? The only other thing I can think of is if he is still teething, it may hurt for him to chew food so he may find drinking more soothing on his gums but if he's anything like my son was, he may be guzzling too much drink and ends up bringing it all up. Monitor the number of wet nappies he's having each day too as a decrease in these may be a sign of dehydration. If it continues, take him to the docs and see what they think. As for the pj's, go to your local op shop and see if you can pick up some second hand t-shirts or long sleeve tops that he could wear if his pj tops get too wet.
I hope it's nothing serious and I still think you're doing a fantastic job!

I hope little Eric is OK today. But I agree, it sounds like teething or a sore throat. Maybe have a little look in his mouth for signs of either, but if it continues, it would be good to have him checked by a doctor.

I don't have kids so I am not an expert....but could it have to do with his teething....I nannied for 4 years and the little ones used to do this when they were teething..

Nick, is this the first time he is using that bottle? Perhaps he has a sore throat and it hurts to swallow? If it keeps happening get it checked out. Its probably nothing but see what the doc thinks.
