Visualisation for an easier labour

Betalife's picture

At BetaLife, we are huge fans of visualisation, and really believe in it's benefits. But now I have just seen first hand how effective it can be during pregnancy and labour.

As you may recall, one of my best friends was pregnant. Well, I am happy to report that she is now mummy to a beautiful little boy! She is quite petite, so had always been quite concerned about giving birth. I think it's a concern for every woman, trying to work out how something so big can make it out at all!

From the moment she found out she was pregnant, she was meditating twice a day for 20 minutes each time. Throughout the meditation, she would concentrate on visualising a calm and happy labour. She had also done a course which explained the birthing process with a more holistic approach, and with that came some additional mediational CDs that she used.

She said she tried to recreate in her head the ideal labour, where her body and her baby worked together throughout the delivery. She reassured herself and her baby that it was a natural process, and imagined everything running smoothly. She also spent a lot of time talking to her baby and developing a bond.

Well, early yesterday morning, she went into labour. And by 1.30pm, she had delivered her healthy baby boy. And how did she described the birth? She said it was everything she hoped it would be. Everything went exactly as she had visualised it, and she really enjoyed the experience.

Has anyone else had an experience like that? Do you believe in the power of visualisation?

I also used visualisation in my labour. It was important to me to keep visualising my cervix opening up with each contraction and it was the only thing that stopped me going nutty, *(well, nuttier), during my labour. When it came time to push I just breathed Ruby out.
Unfortunately, whilst I had been looking forward to birthing the second time around, Pepper was posterior so it was all different and so much more painful, anyway, I guess thats the thing, you prepare yourself for every scenario.

Col, I totally agree. She was also very open to having whatever she needed to make it a better experience! Eye-wink And likewise, if an emergency caesar was needed, she would have been completely fine with that.

Delivering babies might be a natural process, but we also tend to forget how many children and mothers have been lost in the process. It really makes you appreciate all the options we have available now.

Hi Renee
I believe in the power of the mind.

Congrats to your friend.

Visualisation may be beneficial, but I think that accepting that everything may not go to plan may be MORE important.

I had no real expectations and had few difficulties with the birth of my son. While I did have a pethidine shot, he was born so quickly after the drug was administered that it did not enter his system.

A few friends and work colleagues were also pregnant around the same time as I was and only two had bad experiences. Both had pre-determined how they were going to have the baby and when things didn't turn out that way, they found it difficult to cope and bond after the birth.

When I was pregnant family and friends were concerned I was not being realistic about the birthing process and therefore would struggle. I was always very possitive, saying it wont hurt, I wont need any drugs, it will be quick and easy. Once induced and contrations started my son was born 5 hours later and had only gas as releaf. I felf great afterwards and thought I had had the perfect labour. Its just a pity I later found out it was not so perfect and had the complication but am glad that special moment when my son was first passed to me was not spoilt by the complication.

Congrats to your friend on the same arrival of her preciouse little one
